New Puppy Checklist

Puppies require a lot of care and attention. It’s best to make a shopping list and head to the pet store before you bring your new puppy home. We also recommend puppy proofing your home to keep him/her from getting into something harmful (chemicals, electrical cords, dangerous plants, etc.).

Here are some basics you’ll need for your new puppy:

  • Food designed specifically for large breed puppies. We recommend Victor

  • Treats for training (we prefer to use cooked chicken breast cut into small cubes)

  • Food and water dishes

  • Crate small (to be replaced by a bigger one as he/she grows) or large with divider.

  • Puppy potty training pads (with supervision, as puppies like to chew these up!)

  • Bedding (at least 2 sets to have one while the other is in the wash)

  • Doggie gate(s)

  • Soft, adjustable collar (and new ones as he/she grows)

  • At least one 4 to 6 foot leash, leather or webbing (an additional longer lead for training; esp. the "come" command)

  • At least 5 or 6 SAFE toys (the more the better; toys can be rotated)

  • Chewy things. Trachea, hooves, pig ears, bully sticks. USA MADE!

  • NO RAWHIDE! NO NYLA BONE!

  • A soft-bristle brush and short pin brush for grooming

  • Shampoo & Conditioner ~ look for gentle and moisturizing

  • Good-quality dog nail trimmer or electric dremel with diamond tip

  • Dog toothbrush and toothpaste

I love ordering online. Below are some of my favorite websites for ordering things for my dogs. They are very well priced, have wonderful products, and ship them out quickly and well packaged.
